About Perimeter

Perimeter is an AI-powered data platform for disaster response and management. We bridge the gap between government agencies and the communities they serve — replacing outdated text alerts with real-time evacuation maps, routes, and guidance during wildfires, floods, and other emergencies. Currently deployed across 14 states and on track to serve more than half of the US states by the end of this year, Perimeter is entering a pivotal moment of national scale.

About the Role

We’re looking for a Principal Product Designer to own the end-to-end design process and become a force multiplier for the Perimeter Product team. From understanding user workflows, to shipping polished, production-ready interfaces. This is a hands-on role with real ownership: you won’t be handed a perfectly scoped brief, you’ll help write them.

You will be a key part of solving ambiguity and delivering results, by partnering with our PM and CTO to sharpen user stories and PRDs before a single wireframe is drawn, then carrying that clarity through design, engineering handoff, and QA.

What You’ll Do

  • Own the design process end-to-end – including discovery, wireframes, prototypes, high-fidelity specs, and engineering handoff.
  • Collaborate with the PM and CTO to write and pressure-test product requirements and user stories before design begins, reducing ambiguity and downstream rework.
  • Construct and run user interviews and user research to continuously improve our products and create new offerings.
  • Design for web and mobile, with a focus on map-based interfaces and data-dense, high-stakes UX.
  • Create and maintain a lightweight design system and component library.
  • Contribute to product strategy discussions with a design and user empathy lens.

What We’re Looking For

  • 3-5 years of experience as a product designer, with a portfolio of shipped web and mobile products.
  • Willing to travel ~10% of the time to meet with customers.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, and ability to empathize with customers to build effective solutions to their problems.
  • Experience working in small teams or early-stage startups – you’re comfortable with ambiguity and help bring structure to it.
  • Strong interaction design and visual hierarchy skills; must design for clarity under pressure, not just aesthetics.
  • Proficient in Figma for design, prototyping, and specs.
  • Experience collaborating directly with engineers in an agile environment.
  • Strong communicator,  you can explain and defend design decisions clearly.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with map-based interfaces, GIS data visualization, or spatial UX.
  • Background in public safety, civic tech, or emergency management contexts.
  • Familiarity with accessibility standards (WCAG) and inclusive design.
  • Experience working with remote engineering teams.

Why Perimeter

  • Your work directly improves how communities prepare for and respond to disasters.
  • A foundational role with real ownership and early-stage equity.
  • A growing market: climate-driven emergencies and rising public expectations are creating demand across every market we serve.
  • Full coverage of employee medical and dental premiums, a 401(k) you’re eligible for on day one, and unlimited PTO plus 11 paid holidays.
  • A monthly gym membership reimbursement.
